Belmar Resort ruins local sports spot, only for Tourist use!

A space commonly used for years by locals completely for free has now been renovated and privatised, and access is only granted to tourist guests.

One local, Maria, spoke out about this:

“For years we have taken our kids here to play with a ball and run around. It’s such a typical thing for businesses to do – remove a spot loved by locals and give it only to tourists.”

The privatisation and commercialisation of a play place and sports park sparks many concerns for the future of health spaces not only in Lagos, but worldwide. With focus on profits and exclusivity, while neglecting the needs and desired of locals is a risky move.

One particularly upset local, while interviewed, expressed many concerns:

“As if they need more money! They charge over €250 per night for a room! Disgusting greed with no regard for local culture. I have been here since I was born and it is sad to see my city be destroyed year by year. I have had enough of it! What next? Pay to use the beach? No, I will try to destroy it myself.”

Previously a spot free for public use
Now a private spot only for tourist guests of the resort

Located a stones throw away from Porto de Mós beach, the small recreational spot used to host hundreds of people per week – parents, children, sports and activities groups, and everything in between.

“Us (senior citizens) used to do yoga every week here as a group – the classes were free, run by locals, and it helped a lot with our health. Now we do not know where to go.” Kids would come here to play football, adults would come here to stretch, and now it’s gone.

A lovely location for families and kids to run around

A local sports and health business, Peak Algarve, commented:

“While the spot was in need of renovation and fixing up, and if the resort paid for all the renovations and own the land, then it does make sense that they charge to use the space. However, the fact that it is exclusively for use by tourists/guests is the real kicker. If it were only 5 or 10 euros per hour to use the space, I don’t think we’d see so many people upset.” The fact it’s closed for locals is disturbing.
